A minimalist cat shirt is easy to get wrong: shrink an illustration, drop it on the chest, call it clean. The pieces here start from the other end. The drawing is built out of line and interval — contour rings that tighten where the animal is, a single diagonal cutting across them so the shape doesn't settle into a target, and a lot of unprinted cloth left alone on purpose. Take anything away and it stops reading; add anything and it turns into decoration.

Why line art wears well

Solid-fill prints sit on top of a garment and crack along the fold lines. Line work moves with the cloth, and it reads at any distance: a shape from across a room, a set of intervals up close. It also survives the wash better, because there is less ink on the shirt to begin with.
